Whenever it comes to accurately scaling small weights, a precision scale, also known as a pocket scale or gold scale, is the right choice. Size, maximum weight and precision of digital scales

To give you an overview of the different models of precision scales, we have compiled a summary of their most important features. In general, maximum weight and accuracy are proportional / interdependent.

How big should my scale be?

  • Small scales like those from XS, Champion or Micron are better suited for on the road. The XS models also have a removable lid that can be used as a weighing pan.
  • Medium sized scales such as Dipse TP or CD have the advantage of a larger weighing area and are practical both for use at home and to take with you. The CD scale is also well camouflaged: with the lid closed, it looks like a CD case.
  • Large scales such as Dipse HC or Dipse KW offer a large surface area for larger quantities and are best used at home, for example as kitchen scales.

The higher the maximum weight, the heavier you can load the scale

  • 50g - 100g: Highly accurate precision scales. Suitable for determining the weight of very light objects such as precious metals, expensive spices or medicines.
  • 150g - 500g: Exact precision scales for medium to large amounts of light goods such as herbs or jewelry, as well as for small quantities of medium-heavy goods such as food supplements or cosmetics.
  • 500g - 3000g: Compact scales for larger loads of light to medium-heavy objects. These scales measure with an accuracy of 0,1g.

The precision of the scale determines how accurate the measuring result is

  • 0,001g: Measuring accuracy to 1 milligram. Extremely sensitive, should be used in a place completely protected from wind (including breath) and vibration, to obtain accurate results.
  • 0,01g: Highly precise scales that are suitable for use as stamp scales or scales for model making.
  • 0,05g: Digital scales that measure the second decimal place in steps of 5 (twentieth of a gram). Higher maximum weight, yet high accuracy.
  • 0,1g: Scales with lower precision for heavier weights, e.g. as kitchen scales.

Be aware of the correct unit of measurement

Digital scales can display the measurement result in different units. If you want to weigh in grams, you should make sure that the correct measuring unit is set.

In most cases, scales have these 4 settings:

  • g (grams)
  • oz (ounces)
  • dwt (troy ounces)
  • carat

Calibrate precision scales quickly and easily

Our scales usually arrive well calibrated at your house. However, after prolonged use, scales may become inaccurate and should be calibrated. If you are not sure whether your device measures correctly, you can easily test it with a coin. The weight of a €1 coin is 7.50 grams, so if your scale shows a result that is significantly different, it should be recalibrated.

Readjust your scale following these 3 simple steps:

  1. Determine the necessary weight. In most cases, simply press and hold the "C"/"Cal" or "T"/"Tare" button until the scale displays the required weight. Or just look it up in the manual.
  2. After pressing "Cal" or "Tare", place the appropriate weight on the weighing surface and wait until the display stops flashing. Be sure to calibrate on a stable surface!
  3. Take down the weight and test whether the scale measures exactly.

Tips for the correct handling of digital precision scales:

  • Use your scale on a stable, still ground.
  • Move the scale only when it's switched off.
  • Avoid unnecessary transport and shocks.
  • Don't place objects directly on the weighing surface. Use a weighing pan or container to place your goods on the scale.
  • Check the measuring accuracy regularly and calibrate if necessary.
