How to upgrade your bong - How to tune your bong!

The Big Bong Tuning Guide

Deeper, wider, stronger: Guaranteed to make your head bang

You've had your bong for a long time and know it inside out! You've seen your favorite in many situations: fresh and clean, dirty at the festival campground, and dusty on the shelf. You gave your bong a name and mourn whenever a part breaks.

Now you toy with the idea of pimping your pipe and make your relationship more exciting again! A pre-cooler or a new head can often make the old love blossom anew. In this blog post, we explain the differences between pre-coolers, ash traps, and activated carbon filters and tell you everything you need to know about tuning!

What are the benefits of tuning? Can I upgrade my bong?

Most pre-filters are filled with water, just like the pipe itself. The basic idea: an additional water chamber, in which the smoke can cool down even better and filter suspended matter and pollutants more effectively.

Not only does the cooler and cleaner smoke provide a new kick, but also the inhalation intensity increases, as the smoke has to pass through an extra water filter. This is a completely new experience!

Another reason for buying a pre-cooler is cleanliness. Your bong gets less dirty and stays fresh longer. The cooler can be easily removed and cleaned!

TÜV-compliant tuning

What are the basic points to consider when you decide to buy a pre-cooler? Here are the only two tips you will need. A well-assorted headshop will definitely ask you about this.

Tip #1: The cut of your bong - not every chassis fits

Each glass bong has either a 14.5 or 18.8 ground joint. If you don't know the difference, take a picture of your pipe and show it to the seller in the headshop. He should know immediately which pre-cooler models are suitable for your lady. By the way, specialized online headshops always have this information in the description text or the infobox.

Tip #2: Don't over-tune your instrument!

The situation is quite simple: Think about whether your pipe can take the additional weight of a pre-cooler. That means you should check if the stability of your pipe is still given when you attach a cooler. Does it tilt forward? This can easily happen with very thin-walled or small bongs and pipes with narrow feet. In this case, an ash catcher is recommended rather than a pre-cooler. But more about this later.

The classic pre-cooler

This is a simple water filter, usually with clutch and head in combination. You can use it directly as you get it from the store shelf. The smoke travels a longer distance and thus becomes cooler and milder for the lungs. But you also have to pull harder!

As with the bong models, there are many different classic pre-cooler shapes and sizes. Let your imagination run wild!

The percolator pre-cooler

In recent years, a new type of filter system has spread like wildfire in the bong world. The percolator bong hit like a bomb and has found many new fans in the 420 scene.

The principle of a perc is a divided section, mostly in the neck of the bong, where a smoke swirler made of glass is attached. It can have different shapes, such as a tree, dome, honeycomb, spiral, and many more fun designs.

Perks are not only found in bongs, but also in pre-coolers. Due to the whirling, the smoke travels a longer distance than in the classic pre-cooler. You should have a good lung volume to smoke with a percolator pre-cooler. Depending on the perc, the smoke has to pass through many small slits or holes - that's where lung pulling power is needed!

If you decide to use a percolator pre-cooler, know that it is often more difficult to clean them. In any case, get high-proof alcohol from the pharmacy and coarse salt, then everything will work out fine even when cleaning. (Click here to get to our detailed bong cleaning guide)

The activated carbon adapter

In addition to percolator filters, activated carbon in many variations has become a fixed component in recent years and has secured a respected place in many head shops. Smoke filtering through activated carbon has long been used by normal tobacco pipe smokers.

The principle is easy to understand: activated carbon only filters water-soluble particles like nicotine or tar from the smoke, no fat-soluble substances like THC or CBD. It makes the smoke much milder and more pleasant for the lungs. Activated carbon filters for the bong are now available from all major companies. Simply put the activated carbon adapter like a pre-cooler between the head and the bong.

Ash catcher, mud flap, dirt collector, ... you name it!

The last tool we want to describe here is not a prefilter in the classical sense, but an adapter. An ash catcher makes sure that your pipe does not get dirty so quickly. The smoke is not led through an additional water basin as with normal pre-coolers, but rather past it.

Due to the speed at which it is drawn in, heavy particles such as ashes and crumbs are trapped in the ash collector and do not get into the bong. It also ensures that you have to clean your pipe less often because the bong water stays fresh longer.

A little tip at the end:

Combine your ash catcher with an activated carbon filter! This ensures great taste and a clean pipe.

Have a good trip!
