Autoflowering seeds are becoming increasingly popular among growers, both beginners and experienced. They are easy to grow, flower independently of light cycles, and guarantee quick harvests.
Thanks to their robust genetics, they are usually resilient and easy to grow. Whether you are growing indoors or outdoors, autoflowering varieties deliver reliable results with minimal maintenance.
Why autoflowering seeds may be the right choice
Autoflowering cannabis seeds combine a variety of advantages that make them an attractive choice for growers
Automatic flowering
No need to change the light cycle – the plants enter the flowering phase on their own, about 3-4 weeks after germination. Although they are still quite small when flowering begins, they continue to grow during this phase, increasing both in size and in flower mass.
Fast harvest
The very fastest autoflowering varieties can be ready for harvest just 8–10 weeks after germination. This can save a significant amount of time compared to conventional photoperiod cannabis plants.
Robust plants
Autoflowering plants are often more resistant to pests, diseases and fluctuating environmental conditions due to their ruderalis genetics.
Outdoors: multiple harvests per year possible
In our view, this is one of the biggest advantages of autoflowering varieties. Since they start flowering independently of the length of daylight, you can place them in the garden or on the balcony as early as the end of April/beginning of May, and, depending on the variety, harvest as early as mid/end of June. The next plants can then ripen from the beginning of July to the end of August, and after that, another round is possible from the beginning of September to the end of October
Perfect for outdoors
You can grow autoflowering varieties outdoors at any time during the warm months; thanks to their autoflowering function, they will reliably be ready for harvest within about 8 weeks.
The genetics behind autoflowering seeds
Autoflowering cannabis seeds are created by crossing classic indica or sativa strains or indica/sativa hybrids with Cannabis Ruderalis, a hardy hemp variant native to colder regions such as Siberia or northern China. The ruderalis genetics give these plants the ability to automatically flower regardless of the length of daylight.

Tips for the perfect autoflower grow
Indoor and outdoor
Use good, loose soil: We recommend pre-fertilized soil with an admixture of about 30% perlite, so the basic nutrients are already present, and the perlite keeps the soil loose and prevents waterlogging. Our Bushplanet Grow Experts have developed a perfectly balanced pot/soil/fertilizer set especially for autoflowering varieties.
Water sufficiently, but not excessively: Always let the soil dry a little before watering again. If the roots are always wet, their motivation to grow is reduced. In addition, root rot is possible if the soil is waterlogged, which should be avoided at all costs.
For good nutrient absorption, the pH of the water should be between 6.0 and 7.0. We tend to recommend watering in the morning, at least not immediately before nightfall, as the plants can then get “cold feet” at night.
For outdoor cultivation
Choose a sunny, not too windy place for your favorites. Autoflowering plants grow best when they receive direct sunlight from morning to evening. You can also flower autoflowering cannabis plants well in a greenhouse; the covering protects them well from rain – however, good ventilation and temperature control are essential!
For indoor growing
A lighting cycle of 18 to 6 or 20 to 4 hours (light/dark phase) is recommended. Although it is possible to keep autoflowering plants illuminated 24 hours a day, this hardly increases the yield, in our experience.
The humidity should be 50–60% during the (short) growth phase and about 40–50% during the flowering phase.
